Ploughing most parts of Lagos these days has become a nightmare.
Most motorists cave to spend longer hours on journeys that would ordinarily have been an hour’s journey because of the deplorable state of the roads from one cardinal point to another. The total economic effects of such bad roads to the nation, the health of the citizens, operation of businesses, the safety of lives and properties is unquantifiable.

Although the Nigerian Bureau of Statistics (NBS) blames most accidents on these roads to tyre burst and speed violation, the fact is that the state of the road is a huge contributor to the crashes which has led an alarming number of injured and dead road users.
The road has been one of the major problem facing Nigerians today and it has become an embarrassing stigma such that vehicle owners are in distress as their vehicles are not used optimally and dust covering the face of residence and shop owners.
Moreover, the very many potholes and detours mean that vehicles keep breaking down so that on many of Nigeria’s roads emergency mechanics have sprung up to assist stranded motorists sometimes with disastrous consequences.

In the city of Lagos, all the main arteries now have dangerous potholes. It is practically impossible to avoid all of them as quite often one preventive manoeuvre often leads the driver into yet another pothole. There have been accidents and in some cases loss of lives and property. Nigerian trailers often do not secure the containers they carry, relying on their weight for stability. As a result of a combination of circumstances, Nigerian roads are littered with overturned trailers, tankers and containers.
Transporters are lamenting on the loss of revenue. They bewildered that they can only operate skeletal services and that despite the promises from the government in repairing the road upon which their lives hood lies for so many years yet nothing has been done.
“Infact this road is affecting my job as a driver judge traffic every day we can not move freely and our vehicles keep braking down due to much potholes and what we suppose to make in a day is what we make in one week because the movement is slow motorists , Emeka David said”
Lack of maintenance of roads in Nigeria has become a public issue as Nigerians are daily lamenting this failure of leadership.
Good roads are a basic component of good governance. Nigerians are routinely being put at risk everyday as a result of the failure of the state to provide adequate amenities for its citizens.
“the government has been promising on reconstructing this road for years now but yet nothing has been done there are even other roads around this ogba that is even worst than Akinfenwa High chief Emanuel Salako said”.
Another problem besetting Nigerian roads is that they are not designed for expansion. As the volume of traffic increases, road construction should be seen to be keeping pace Akinfenwa street for instance, can do with further expansion. Cooperate organisations should also assist in managing our roads as part of their social responsibility. “Since the government re not fulfilling their promises concerning the condition of the road i think some of these corporate organisations can join hand and do something as part of their social responsibility Toluwani said”.

The residents are calling on the government and all the authorities involved in road construction and maintenance should buckle up and do something to remove the blot on Nigeria image.
