ECONOMY: Rampant Hawking in Lagos

January 13, 2020

HNMC/18/051- BRAIMOH JOY OMONEGO

Hawking on Nigerian highways has become a norm despite effort by government at levels to combat the menace. Also, a tribunal was set up to prosecute hawkers who flout the law. Despite these government attempts, hawking on major highways and expressways has surprising increased instead of a reduction.

The increase in highway hawking has drawn concerns from residents in Lagos as it has become rampant to see both young and old selling soft drinks on Nigerian major roads.

Hawkers in action

Commenting on why there has been unabated increase in the number of people, hawking on Lagos highways in spite of government effort to curb the menace, Mrs Sarah, a hawker in Ojuelegba area of Lagos, said the high cost of renting a shop in Lagos and the high volumes of sales they make on the streets and highways are some of the reasons they go against the laws.
The 32 year-old added that the need to bring their wares closer to passerby, motorists and passengers also make them embrace hawking on the expressways. “Nobody wants to pay high amount for shops and sit down all day without making sales. We sell more on the highway than when we stay in our shops,” she said.On the effects of highway hawking in Lagos State a passer by stated that one of the main causes of traffic gridlock in Lagos is the careless manner at which hawkers run across moving vehicles. He stated that as a result of this, drivers would be made to pull their brakes abruptly to avoid running them over.

Teenagers seen Hawking

“Most times, it is not the bad state of the roads or the queues at various filling stations that cause traffic but hawkers that run across the highways like they own the road.“They don’t move away from oncoming vehicles because they believe that the drivers should be human enough to pull brake,”

Lagos Goes Tough On Commercial Motorcycles And Tricycles

The Lagos State Government has announced plans to halt the abuse of traffic laws by motorcycle and tricycle riders, saying the menace can no longer be condoned.

Mr Gbenga Omotosho, a commissioner for Information and strategy affirmed that the ongoing enforcement of traffic laws will be leveled up across the state to check motorcyclists and motorists violating the laws.

He explained that the violation of traffic laws by commercial motorcyclists was unacceptable, thereby necessitating the enforcement of the State Traffic Law 2018 to pave the way for the implementation of the present administration’s transportation project.

“We cannot fold our arms and watch them disrupt the peace of the State. Over 1500 accidents involving tricycles were reported across the State from 2015 till 2019 while over 70 died and 250 were injured.” He said.

Omotosho stated that their operations were restricted on 475 roads, including highways and bridges.

However, the conveyance of more than a passenger, expectant women, adults with babies, as well as children of school age forbidden.

Piggery: A Lucrative Investment

By: Ilo Blessing

Piggy banks – we all grew up with them and they were an instrumental piece to inculcate a saving culture. It’s an interesting analogy for pigs to be associated with money given that in many Nigeria households, pig farming as a profession is looked down upon given the stereotypes that pigs are dirty and filthy.

But one 36 year old farmer, Mrs Bukky Oladipupo has taken the unconventional path and is currently rearing pigs against the societal expectations. Last Friday, I paid a visit  to her piggery farm and her inspiring journey to successful pig farming was deeply ingrained in my mind.

Here is Mrs Bukky Oladipupo success story that I hope will motivate more youth to consider pig farming.

Mrs Bukky hail from Abeokuta in Ogunstate and grew up thinking she was going to do farming differently because she had always had that passion for rearing animals but when she got into the business of farming virtually every one was doing the same thing.

This made her turn to pigry farming researching into it she realised that pigs are highly prolific and efficient feed converters. A sow can be bred as early as 8-9 months of age and can farrow twice in a year, producing 6-12 piglets in each farrowing. He was advised that pig farming requires small investment on buildings and equipment but will give quick returns. The marketable weight of pigs can be achieved in 6 to 8 months but still, piggery is not considered as a decent vocation by many Nigerians.

In addition, she attended a training programme on pig farming at ICAR- Nigeria Veterinary Research Institute, which proved motivational and equipped him with basic skills in pig husbandry. To date, she still maintains regular contacts with this institute for technical advice.

Mrs Bukky started her piggery venture with 6 pregnant sows, 6 piglets plus a small housing facility around 2004-2005.

The cleanliness level at this farm which houses around 300 pigs is impeccable. This explains the negligible piglet mortality in his farm otherwise common in many pig farms. She formulates her own pig ration (corn, soybean, rice polish, wheat bran, salt & minerals), thus, saving on feed cost- an important contributor to her profits from piggry.

Her message to the youth “Never listen to those who discourage you trying a new idea, to bring a difference in your life. Pig is a lovely animal worth rearing for profit and prosperity; it’s not a dirty animal for sure as they can give a decent income, if one knows how to raise them well”.

Mrs Bukky Oladipupo is grateful to pigs and all those who helped her in moulding the woman she is today – a rich and famous young woman in her thirties. She is also an internet and tech savvy agripreneur who keep herself updated on pig farming.

A 25-year-old cobbler, Olamide Babayemi, has been arrested for raping a 22-year-old Microbiology graduate and sharing the victim’s nude video with his friends.

Babayemi was alleged to have invited the victim, whom he claimed was his girlfriend, to come and collect the phone she asked him to buy in Mowe, Obafemi-Owode Local Government Area of Ogun State.

The suspect was reported to have soaked the victim’s clothes in water when she got to the agreed location and used his phone to record her nudeness before sending the video to some of his friends.

The Police Public Relations Officer in the state, Abimbola Oyeyemi, disclosed this on Sunday in a statement.

Oyeyemi said Babayemi was arrested by men of the command on January 4, 2020, for the alleged crime.

The PPRO said the suspect also attempted to kill the victim after raping and filming her in a nude posture in order to cover up his crime.

Oyeyemi said the suspect was arrested following a report by the victim at the Redemption Camp Police Station in Mowe.

The PPRO stated, “The victim came to the Redemption Camp Police Station and reported that she gave the sum of N18,000 to the cobbler, whom she had known for quite some time, to buy a mobile telephone for her.

“She explained further that the cobbler, who refused to either buy the phone or refund her money, suddenly called her on January 2 to come to the Greenland Estate in Mowe to collect the phone.

“On getting there, the suspect forcefully removed all her clothes and raped her.

“The victim stated further that after he had forcefully had carnal knowledge of her, the suspect soaked her clothes in water and used his phone to record her nudeness, which he started sending to some of his friends.

“When he realised that the victim might report him to the police, he made an attempt to snuff life out of her, but she was lucky when the suspect’s mother called him on the phone to come and meet her at the gate of the estate, which gave her the opportunity to escape.

On the strength of the report, the DPO, Redemption Camp Police Station, CSP Chris Amanyi, mobilised detectives to go after the suspect, who had taken to his heels, and he was eventually apprehended on January 4, 2020, when his mother brought him to the station.

“On interrogation, the suspect, who claimed to be the victim’s boyfriend, confessed that he committed the crime, but blamed the girl for calling it quits with him after she graduated from the university.

“When asked for the reasons behind recording the nude video of the victim, he said he did so to prevent her from reporting him to the police.”

The PPRO added that the Commissioner of Police in the state, Kenneth Ebrimson, had ordered the immediate transfer of the suspect to the State Criminal Investigation and Intelligence Department for further investigation and prosecution.

Olugbemi Yetunde Comfort Hmmc/17/035

Suspected hoodlums have reportedly killed Mr Mark Jidel, a security guard at the Noel Ojei Holdings Limited along the Asaba/Benin Expressway, by the Summit junction in Asaba, the Delta State capital.

It was gathered that the security guard, who was stabbed to death at his duty post on January 5, 2020, had over time complained that criminals frequently visited the company to vandalise its property.

A source, who spoke on condition of anonymity, told our correspondent that on the day he was killed, Jidel was on night duty when the criminals invaded the company and stabbed him in the shoulder and inserted an iron into his body and covered the spilled blood with ashes.

“It was a good Samaritan, Mr John Ifeokwu, who discovered the body the following morning and alerted the police,” the source said.

He added that the security guard had been complaining about frequent attacks and vandalism of the company’s property to the management and his pastor because he was a dedicated Christian.

Jidel’s corpse was said to have been deposited in the Federal Medical Centre mortuary by the management of the company, which also mobilised the police to swing into action to arrest the perpetrators.

GIFT OKPA-FRANCIS: A RISING STAR IN NIGERIA’S MAKEUP INDUSTRY

VICTOR CHINEDU ANTHONY

HNMC/18/034

‘’Determination is key. I’m of the opinion that if you are determined with whatever you do, you will definitely succeed.’’ The words of the talented Gift Okpa-Francis, a rising star in the world of the makeup industry.

A native of Obubra Local Government Area of Cross River State in Southern Nigeria and also a graduate of Mass Communication from the Yaba College of Technology in Lagos, Nigeria, the 24 year old was driven to take up the beauty brush thanks to her mentor, Mr Kingsley Ofoha. This happened after leaving secondary school at the age of 17 and could not get an admission into a higher institution; sitting for the Unified Tertiary Matriculation Examinations three good times.

Filled with depression and frustration, Gift opened up to Mr Ofoha who told her education is 25% of your whole as a human being, experience carries another 25%, skills acquired another 25% and character making up the remaining 25% which builds one up as a human being.

Gift Okpa-Francis

He advised she focus on another part of the 25% which was acquiring a skill and the first option that hit her head delving into fashion. He told her to think wisely about her choice of skill, and it hit her. She said that she liked make up. He then told her to go down that line and keep working at it; going on the internet to search for makeup schools and videos.

Unknown to her she had actually had the liking for combination of colours for a very long time, dating back as far as Junior Secondary School as would purchase cheap roadside make-up items and one time while preparing for church applied it on her face; which turned out horrible to the surprise of her mother who had never applied make-up on her own face.

She sourced for schools that she could learn the craft but most schools were too expensive concerning the fees but later located someone staying on her street that she could learn from and right now the rest is history.

To Gift, makeup has been ‘’a calling’’ and she herself is amazed of how she has grown in the craft, knowing fully well she has to learn and learn more every single day about the profession.

Stating a variety of make-up artists she follows and appreciates like Jide Oscentola, Florence Faces and Claudia Michael, Gift sees herself as her role model in the make-up industry as she wants to carve a name for herself and not walk in the shadow of others.

Speaking about her makeup brand Proteus Vanity, she disclosed the company does not focus on the parties’ and birthday makeup but will also cut across rendering services for models, music videos and movies which she has already started.

Already acquiring a name for herself as the lead make-up artist for the reality TV show MTN Project Fame, she feels this is just the beginning of something extraordinary; with a promise that greater things lie ahead and the world has not even seen the tip of the iceberg of what is to come from her and from Proteus Vanity which she revealed that the brand will be the best make-up brand in the nation with the likes of House of Tara and so on.

PANACEA TO UNEMPLOYMENT IN NIGERIA

by OJO OLUWAFEMI JOSEPH, HNMC/18/046, PRINT

In Nigeria now, a large number of youths yearn to be their own bosses and are ready to build up their own business from the ground to the top.

Money growing in soil , Business success concept.

This entrepreneurial tendency has led the Federal Government to help youths go into farming and other branches of Agric-business by providing grants, loans and other materials to individuals and also to set up a task force on daily astronomical increase in price of food commodities.

But since the present administration assumed office, it has been making endless promises of introducing measures to diversify the economy, by devoting more resources to agriculture, especially in the previous national budget.

The initiative was specifically aimed at reducing the unemployment of youths and graduates in the Labour Market and also to create the mindset that wealth can also be generated from Agric-business.

One of the major challenges facing youths from going into farming in this country, according to stakeholders, is lack of support from government, in terms of funds and information.

Although, Government through the Bank of Industry (BOI) and Bank of Agriculture (BOA), has announced the provision of loan facilities to graduates, but when it comes to accessing the funds, the criteria of getting it is always stringent and this has discouraged most youths, who studied agriculture and others interested in going into other branches in agriculture.

Agriculture is no doubt a possible means of generating sustainable income in a developing nation like Nigeria and the way forward of encouraging youths back to agriculture can be as follows:

Creating Awareness: The Federal Government must put into consideration the need to create publicity among youths through various platforms such as; the mass media, and social media respectively.

Organizing Training and Workshop:  To promote youth participation in agriculture, the Federal Government should invest in adequate training of the youths and graduates in order to encourage and ensure successful participation in agriculture.

Empowerment: The Federal Government must also make it part of their plans to encourage youths after training them by empowering those who are interested in practising the trade.

Government should ensure that youths are offered financial supports in terms of grants and loans to further encourage trainees in the various agricultural programmes and Government should put in place agencies that would look into management of funds, implementation of policies and sanction those responsible for misappropriation of government funds.

Professional Guidance: Government should put in place professional facilitators and artisans in the trade to further  train the youths and ensure that they undergo compulsory periodic training, seminars, workshops and symposiums in order to further improve their skills that have been learnt.

Provision of Subsidised Farming Equipment: Government should ensure that farm implements are given to youths and farm machinery such as: ploughs, ridges, tractors, cultivators and so on should be sold at a very subsidised rates which will be affordable to encourage youths to participate in agriculture.

The burden of empowering youths should not be left to the Federal Government alone, government at all levels (State and Local) should also encourage youths in participating in agriculture ranging from poultry farming, fish farming, snail farming, and so on.

Dirt: Bad menace in Ogun state

Okesanya Ifeoluwa Adebimpe

Hnmc/18/022

Perhaps, you have heard so much about Ogun state and you are visiting for the first time, you are so eager, expecting to see this beautiful town.
Then, you just entered Ifo and you are swayed by the sights that greet you on the way. Heaps of stinking refuse; irresponsible okada riders going recklessly to different directions and water-logged potholes.
Indeed, there are many things that make Ifo very attractive.. There are boutiques, brewery, cement companies, fun parks and other places of interests.
But most of these are fading into the dustbin of history. The fun parks are being abandoned and bike riders and mountains of refuse are taking the centre stage in the once beautiful town..
One is not surprised by the eye-sore Ifo has become, one is not surprised that Ifo streets are dirty. Residents are no longer swayed by the unsanitary conditions and improper waste disposal that litter the streets of Ifo. The authorities in charge of keeping Ogun state clean(OGEPA) seem to be sleeping.
A trader on Saturday said;
“They are always complaining that the dirt carrier should help pack all at once but they always give an excuse for inadequate machineries”.
The beauty of Ifo is no more. The community is nothing but a ghost land where illegal aliens and street urchins hold sway. Everywhere you turn to, heaps of refuse with their accompanying health hazards are practically waving at you. Ifo is too filthy and so is papa starting from Onihale through to Sango ota and ijoko road. The dirt is overflowing. Everywhere you look, everywhere you go Everywhere is littered with filth.
Almost every street, junction, major roads and even market places have replaced dustbin sites in the state, with piles and tonnes of dirt littering every nook and cranny of the city.
The dirts are not only eye sores, they have also started competing with motorists for rights of way, with piles of refuse covering major roads, making both human and vehicular traffic difficult.
