Speaking to a road side okrika seller said “This okrika clothes re patronised by average Nigerians, reasons being that it is very affordable and of good quality, while some patronise okrika clothes because of its high quality” .

Not everyone who patronise fairly used clothes re actually not financially buoyant to afford materials gotten from boutiques, rather some people re of the perception that okrika clothes re of a higher quality than some of these boutique clothes, which in most cases, one can hardly tell the difference between okrika and boutique clothes.

Emirates flights disrupted over heavy rainfall in Dubai, Abuja, Lagos flights delayed

Heavy rainfall in Dubai, United Arab Emirates (UAE), has caused disruptions to several Emirates flights departing from or arriving at Dubai International Airport on Saturday. This had forced the airline to cancel or delay several flights while other flights scheduled to arrive Dubai were delayed, it was learnt.

This had forced the airline to cancel or delay several flights while other flights scheduled to arrive Dubai were delayed, it was learnt.

Reports state that while other flights were cancelled, the flights to Lagos and Abuja were only delayed. Also, EK783 flight to Murtala Muhammed International Airport (MMIA), which was to arrive Lagos at 3:40, was also delayed and estimated to arrive Lagos at 20:44hrs due to late departure of the operating aircraft from originating airport in Dubai. This was believed to be as a result of the flood, which authorities in Dubai are said to be working tirelessly to fix.

“Customers have been requested to check their flight status on the link below for the latest information regarding their flights. Emirates apologizes for any inconvenience caused.” It said the safety of its passengers and crew “is of paramount importance and will not be compromised.” Also Dubai Airports, in a statement posted on its Twitter Page, confirmed that operations at the airport “continue to be hampered by the knock-on effects of today’s heavy rainfall, resulting in a number of flight delays, cancellations & diversions.” “We continue to work closely with our partners to restore full operations & minimise inconvenience to our customers,” it added. The airport said however, that, with additional rain expected later this evening, the disruption is expected to continue for the next 24 hours. “Customers are advised to check directly with their airlines for more specific flight information and allow additional time to get to the airport.”

The NIJ Gala Boy: A Proud Entrepreneur

By: Ajibade Morakinyo

When hawking is heard, the thoughts that come to mind include poverty, embarrassment, shame, reproach, among others. These might be what the mind could capture and which definitely can dissuade anyone planning to indulge in it. But for Olorunshola Emmanuel Oluwaseun – a National Diploma 1 student of Nigerian Institute of Journalism, these thoughts are incapacitated to stop him from hawking even in the tertiary institution.

Although there are several students scattered in National Diploma, Higher National Diploma, and Post Graduate Diploma classes engaging in affordable entrepreneurial activities within the confine of their classes, Emmanuel took his own out of anyone’s expectation as he choose to hawk sausage roll (popularly called gala) and cake on campus; without considering what his course-mates, friends, haters, and lecturers would tag him.

Even while this community of students looks at him distinctively because when they see him, all they could resonate is the poor guys doing same act in traffic jam across Lagos state’s highways and streets. Emmanuel claimed the need for what the students can eat without having to journey down to the school cafeteria birthed this idea in him.

“Before now, we have students selling apple, candies, zobo, biscuits, chin-chin, cloths, shoes, snacks,  birthday cakes, small chops, among others in the school,” a student of National Diploma 1, Majagun Oyinkansola disclosed, “while some are rendering services like laundry, cleaning, fashion designing, hair styling for both sex, and even to recharge cards, before Emmanuel”.

Emmanuel selling to some HND 2 students

“I think what makes Emmanuel special among other student-entrepreneurs is because students are familiar with people selling gala and drinks in traffic,” Adeoti Kelani, a Higher National Diploma 2 student affirmed, and said when he brings his box of gala to students, their mind will easily flash to the guys selling such on the streets. And because he is a guy, it resonates.

With this, Emmanuel acknowledged that he feels shy sometimes while taking his box of gala and cake around the school and classes. “Especially when students are subtly asking if I have hawked in traffic before, but what I do in such cases is just to encourage myself not to be intimidated.

“I know this carved a niche for me but sometimes the sales discourage me not to continue as students will always want to buy on credit”, he said.

“His courage surprises me every time I set my eyes on him with the box of gala and cake. The most surprising part is that he does not even put the sausage and cakes in a plastic container like other students, he puts them in an open carton and parades them on his hand to all classes; even to the PGD classes,” HND 1 students, Ilo Blessing expressed as she said this really made him a rare gem among hundreds. “You will hardly find a student engaging in such act they considered embarrassing,” she said.

While one of the reasons students engage in such act remain to secure a source for sustenance, Emmanuel cleared the air of any controversy about maybe his parents are poor or he is incapacitated financially.

He said “some students think I am doing this for sustenance, which I can literally read on their faces with the pity look they give me”. He attributed the reason for engaging in such act to zeal for entrepreneurship. “This is the propeller for my action”, he said.

In years to come, at his HND level or even after graduation, he however promised not to stop the concept. To him, there is a bigger plan for his entrepreneurial spirit in the nearest future “and that’s why I can’t afford to stop this despite whatever anyone is saying”.

“I have a bigger plan for my future as an entrepreneur. And when I come back for my HND, I have made necessary plans that would make this a bigger ‘enterprise’ on this campus,” he said, as he claimed he can’t despise the days of his little beginning for any reason; “hence, with consistency, which is part of keys to success, I am certain I would reach the pinnacle”.

Emmanuel attending to some HND 2 students during their break

No matter what anyone tries to do, Emmanuel disclosed that this won’t affect his entrepreneurial skill. “Moreover, my parents and elders are not against this; they are comfortable about this,” he said, while confirming that nobody can win his heart to the extent of persuading him not to indulge in such act.

“All lot of things has formed my conviction about entrepreneurship as a mean of solving people’s problem in our society. This didn’t just start now, it started long ago while I was growing up”, Emmanuel said, while emphasizing his philosophy is not based on ‘following the crowd’.

No doubt, not following the crowd comes with tons of criticism dangerous for one to bear but this does not affect the esteem of Emmanauel. Even though “this sometimes tries to get to me, but I wave it with the beautiful pictures of future that lies ahead of me”, Emmanuel said.

Surprisingly, “I know he will encounter diverse challenges on esteem and other unfriendly behavioral attitude from students, which has always given me concern about him and how he will cope in such cases,” Lamidi Oyindamola, ND 2 students revealed.

She therefore urged him to embrace any challenge that tried to discourage him because the effects are not for now but future.

Emmanuel’s act on campus looks wield to many, while he has no doubt carved a unique niche for himself in the community. “It’s too late for me to give up because vision is driving me,” he said as he also advised everyone especially the youth to have vision that will always drive them even when the temptation of criticism from the sea of life hit the ship taking them to their destination.

BENEFITS OF LEARNING MUSIC

OSUNTAYO DOYINSOLA ESTHER

HND2(BROADCAST)

HNMC/18/030

Music is a universal language that touches beyond playing of musical instruments or singing. In fact, one can derive many benefits from learning music, some of which includes:

Improved wellbeing

Enhanced intellectual functions

New friendships

Increased self-confidence and belief in ones self

Increased discipline and tolerance

Heightened creativity

Better connection with others

Teamwork

An avenue to relieve stress

A fun endeavour

The most common query about the study of music borders around people not being certain of their motivation to study music. You hear them ask, why should I learn music? Or what do I stand to gain from learning music? Why can’t I focus on something else that will be useful for my career and the actualization of my goals or use the time to learn about financial investments, develop my leadership skills or some other endeavoer?

While being able to manage ones finances and leadership are important to achieving set goals in life, music is most beneficial because it is all encompassing. However, the impact of music is less obvious at the initial stage than that of finance and leadership but no one can deny that it affords people the opportunity to build skills that will be beneficial to ones professional and private life.

There are many advantages to learning music, but this article will limit its focus to the advantages listed above.

Music Does Wonders to the learners Health
Research has shown that learning or listening to music causes significant health improvements through the following ways it lowers blood pressure, helps reduce stress and anxiety levels, and strengthens immunological response and makes the music learner more resistant to viruses.
Even at old age, music can still be enjoyed. Learning music is a social activity that keeps ones minds active. It is especially important in protecting ourselves from mind-related diseases.

Music enhances intellectual functions

Studies have shown that learning music can enhance the mind when one starts to learn it at an early stage. What then happens if you have passed this early stage of learning?

It turns out that learning music at an older age can do wonders for your mind as well.
In a study conducted at the University of South Florida, adults aged between 60 and 85 were given piano lessons. Six months later, Most of them exhibited improved verbal fluency, information processing skills, memory, and other cognitive functions.

Music helps one make new friends.

When you learn how to play an instrument, you will be able to create something beautiful for friends and loved ones to enjoy, which eventually brings you closer to them.
If a person masters the instrument to a stage where they can play music in public, they will always have a connection established with their audience at each point where they get to play. If you play with a group of musicians, a sense of togetherness is shared amongst such musicians, who can collectively produce something beautiful together than individually.
There is nothing as good as old-fashioned jamming/hangout session with other musicians, and the bonds and friendships that comes with such are priceless.

Music builds self-confidence and belief.

Ever wondered, how easy it is for some seasoned musicians to go on stage in front of hundreds, or even thousands of people, and perform with confidence?
Of a truth, it takes a whole lot of self-belief and confidence to perform such feat, no matter how good you are.
Learning music gives you the opportunity to put yourself in that situation and it helps you pull through them. The audience does not have to be a large one; you could be performing for just one person, group of friends, or your partner but when you pull off that small performance, you will feel a whole lot better about yourself. The most interesting thing here is that confidence also rubs on other aspect of your life.

Music Trains Discipline and tolerance.

The ability to play music well depends on the amount of work and time put into learning. Learning music requires commitment and perseverance. These essential prices must be paid before realizing the rewards. No one can master their music craft without knowing the importance of patience and discipline.

Music Enhances creativity

Learning music opens up your perception and, allows you look beyond what is the norm, such that you can express yourself in a new way.
Music is all about understanding basic rules and then using such rules to express yourself. This expression means you will sound beautiful and at the same time appealing to your listeners. Composing your own song, improvisation, and performance of existing songs are the ways musicians create beauties out of nothing.
It is no surprise that research has shown that most successful people have at one time or the other studied music.

Music help you connect with others better

Music as always been defined as a universal language which explains why many of us can sing and appreciate songs in languages we do not speak or understand. You will be surprised at how music can bring you closer to people, especially if you need to socialize with people from other cultures. If you have ever met someone for the first time, and you lack a subject of discussion, asking the other person what his/her favorite song is a perfect icebreaker that will complement your knowledge in music.

Music makes you a team player.

When you see different musicians performing together, they always share togetherness and team spirit that is fuelled by the music. Music performance always involves listening to your team-mates and watches their facial and body language. Only then can you decide how you and your instrument can fit in seamlessly with the song.
The ability to listen to what everyone is playing and then creating something to fit will resonate with other areas of your life and make you an all-round team player.

Benefit of good tuition and finding the right teacher for your chosen instrument or voice.

The first step to being a successful musician is finding an instrument you love. Learning an instrument say Violin, guitar, trumpet and drums does not come easy. One would need a teacher to put one through the steps needed to attain the right foundation to getting the best out of your desired instrument. Some of the benefits of learning through the right teacher includes:
The right teacher will understand your learning habits and learning needs, which will make him/her, put you through how to overcome such needs and difficulty.
A key part of learning an instrument is keeping track of mistakes and errors, and effectively tracking improvements as one continue to learn such instrument. If these trackings are left to the student alone, they may not be comprehensive. A good teacher will have a streamlined and effective way of keeping track of his/her student progress over time.
Use of specialized teaching methods is one of the benefits that are attached to finding a good teacher. A good teacher will have some special and unique method of teaching that set it apart from other teachers out there.
Creating an ideal learning environment is another benefit a student can get from learning the instrument through the right teacher.
Choosing the right teacher to learn an instrument from is a big challenge; there are many teachers out there with many different approaches to teaching. The key to learning an instrument through the right teacher is to select a teacher who stands out from the rest and who can offer you all you need to excel in your chosen instrument. With these in mind, the benefits listed above will be of some use in helping you reach an informed decision. Choosing the right teacher can be challenging, but the things you stand to gain from sticking with the right teacher are numerous.

NUC CLEARS THE CONFUSION IN MASS COMMUNICATION COURSE SPLITTING

The National Universities Commission (NUC) has in a bid clarified the confusion that followed the recent splitting of Mass Communication as a course in Nigerian tertiary institutions, saying that the course was not scrapped but only broken down into seven units.

The NUC stated the sub division of the course, which according to them has to be divided into cinematography, media studies, public relations studies, advertising, broadcasting, film and multi-media studies, development communication studies, information and media studies to enhance specialisation.

The commission’s spokesperson, Ibrahim Yakassai, in an interview with Punch On Friday, January 10, 2019, said that universities had the liberty to begin the new programs after securing NUC approval.
He also stated that “We have unbundled mass communication, but we did not scrap it. Any institution that wishes to retain it could and those that wish to break it into different programs can; there is no confusion”.

He also further stated that “Any university that meets the criteria in terms of lecturers, laboratory; it is left for them to just start when they are ready, hence, its the university that would meet the requirements to kick start.”

However, Yakassai said the approval of the courses is not automatic, adding that universities have to meet certain requirements before they can start the programs.

Finally, He said that breaking Mass Communication down into seven courses would offer tertiary institutions an opportunity to have more degree courses.

NFVCB EXPLAINS THE REMOVAL OF SUGAR RUSH FROM CINEMA

Following its order that ‘Sugar Rush’ be suspended from showing in cinemas, the National Film and Video Censors Board (NFVCB) has explained the reason for stopping the screening of the movie.

The Board offered the explanation following the social media outrage that greeted its decision.

The suspension of the movie, which hit cinemas on December 25, 2019, has since become a trending topic on Twitter, as Nigerians clamoured for the return of the movie in cinemas with #BringSugarRushback.

Reacting to the outrage, NFVCB in a statement on its Facebook page said, ‘Sugar Rush’ was suspended in cinemas because the temporary approval given for the movie exhibition has expired.

The statement read in part, “It has come to our notice that #BringBackSugarRush is currently gaining momentum on Twitter with many speculating a ban on the movie ‘Sugar Rush’ and presuming the supposed action as a sign of government’s intention to stifle creativity.”The movie has not just significantly increased box office revenues within a short period but has improved our cinematic culture which is sine qua non for attracting the investment we so much desire as a nation.”The Executive Director of the Board, Adedayo Thomas, took responsibility for the final approval of the movie, saying he was preoccupied with extant responsibilities. He said, “I, however, take responsibility for the gap in communication and the delay in granting final approval as the temporary approval given for the movie exhibition expired before we could release an official statement due to my preoccupation with extant responsibilities and a backlog of movies requiring approval as a result of the December rush.“I am currently working with the distributor, producer, director and key actors to grant final approval for the resumed exhibition at cinemas.”

Movie producers react

Meanwhile, film producers such as Editi Effiong and Omoni Oboli have reacted to the suspension of the movie.

While Oboli called on the Federal Government to #BringSugarRushback, Effiong resolved to ‘making art that will show up the ineffectual leadership of our Nigerian society.’

Kwara State Govt reacts to viral video showing trafficked indigene in Lebanon; Agents Napped

Governor Abdulrahman Abdulrasaq of Kwara State has condemned the rising trend of human trafficking in the country and vowed to deal with anyone caught in the state according to the dictates of the law.

Abdulrazaq gave the condemnation, on Friday, in Ilorin in a statement issued by his Chief Press Secretary, Rafiu Ajakaye, in reaction to video footage which featured one Ms Ajayi Omolola, a victim of human trafficking in Lebanon.

Omolola, whose parents live in Ilorin, was tricked into travelling to Lebanon in the guise of engaging her as an English tutor.

The victim in her video also reports that instead of employing her as a tutor, she was being used as a slave.

Her parent and Naptip officials.

“The governor condemns this development in the strongest terms possible and has immediately linked up with the security agencies to get to the root of the matter.

“We are glad to announce that three suspects, comprising two Nigerians and the Lebanese referred to in the footage, have been arrested in connection with the case and the suspects are being interrogated.

“Apart from Ms Ajayi, discreet investigations by the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps, in Kwara State have revealed that there are at least 28 other victims of this horrible trafficking gang.

“The governor is concerned that fellow human beings are engaging in another round of slavery despite the horror and unquantifiable loss of the 20th Century,” the statement said.

It urged residents to be bold to report any such activity they might know of in their neighborhood.

“He also calls for the highest penalty for anyone caught in the activity, no matter their class in the society, to deter others from engaging in it,” the statement added.
